The Economics of Blackpink

Could, should, and maybe, but still interesting to read about “The Economics of Blackpink”, the hugely popular K-Pop girl group. They will perform in Hong Kong as part of their global “Deadline” tour at the Kai Tak Stadium over the weekend, with one more show on Monday.

Though it’s great to read about another “surge” in tourists, we can’t help but wonder where they’re from. What type of spending power do they have? What’s the duration of an average stay in Hong Kong?

Tickets for the Blackpink concert packages are priced at almost HK$4000 down to around HK$800. Merchandise rights belong to management and the promoter, with the venue receiving a small percentage on sales.

A professor in Economics and Finance at the Chinese University cautioned that talk of “HK$195 million in economic value for Hong Kong is only a fraction of the city’s HK$3.17 trillion gross domestic product in 2024. He added that the concerts would not bring as much economic gain as the Olympics.”

Duh.
