The Joy Luck Club Of Horse Racing

It was not so much of a “Lucky Start” for Patrick Kwok Ho-chuen, the junior Sasa member, and owner of idiosyncratic galloper Beauty Eternal.

Having tied his nuptials- we know, we know-earlier this week, in the suffocatingly superstitious whirl of Hong Kong racing, this was meant to usher in much good luck.

Alas, tying one’s nuptials or not, Beauty Energy had to be withdrawn prior to the race after going ballistic and dumping jockey Zac Purton and then trying to head butt another horse.

Good luck will have to be put on hold.

Let’s also spare a thought for those who took this $1.40 favourite in multis, the six up and treble.

That money went onto the new race favourite En Pointe who came third.

The race was won by the second favourite on the tote in Attulibigeal. But what if you never picked this horse?

Let’s not forget this cardinal rule in gambling...

On a more positive note, congrats to hard working French jockey Antoine Hamelin who welcomed a new baby girl to his family and celebrated with a perfectly timed double.

...

KAH TO ADD ANOTHER BOW TO HER CAREER?

With her having spurned one of those usual splendiferous financial packages with all the frills offers to ride in Hong Kong mentioning how she would “hate the lifestyle there”, it’s understood that the ubiquitous, popular and extremely talented Jamie Kah, 27, is taking out a Trainer’s licence.

Jamie Kah is certainly not clueless. She’s fearless and knows what’s good for her. Her private life? It’s private.

She’s also not another sycophant who loves the smell of money in the morning, something shown with her ballsy response to the offer from the Hong Kong Jockey Club who is not used to being rejected.

But times change. There’s a changing of the guard taking place.
