RIDE

We probably don’t know it now, but we have a front row seat to the world at one of it’s most important and pivotal times.

Who knows where anything is leading and how are we to know who’s real and who’s not, including those around us, so we either have to sharpen our intuitive skills, look beyond the obvious, realise that we’re very much at the edge of a feather expecting to fly and which we must do if we are to ever see if we have wings.

I do this through writing and starting with a blank sheet of paper and see where it leads me and what I uncover about myself that’s been hiding inside.

Everything that you find here might be different, but it’s one person kinda shadow boxing with themselves and dodging the tough questions, but wanting to face them head on and be knocked out or taken in.

Having been a crappy pop columnist in my teens and an entertainment writer for Billboard magazine and the South China Morning Post and the Standard to becoming something of a Rock journalist in my twenties, and then an adman and music executive, I have changed over the years.

The woman I still love completely and I are no longer together and that hurts really badly, but I am now stretching myself and going wherever some higher power is taking me- very probably towards making the mini movies that are running in my head and working on creating a young entrepreneurs club because I don’t think creative business minded talent who I find interesting and exciting have good places- certainly not in Hong Kong- to hone their strengths.

There’s way too much of everything and nothing out there these days and it’s so easy to lose focus purely because you have some funding when the reality of an idea isn’t even there.

I have had a couple of brilliant mentors in my life who made me zig when I could have zagged. They have helped me immensely.

I have also been inspired by artists like Bob Dylan, the Beatles, as a group and separately, filmmakers like David Lynch, Coppola, Spielberg, Scorsese, Cameron Crowe, and have great respect for the films of Alfred Hitchcock.

I have always had massive attack love for the music of Motown, shared smoking a joint with Helen Reddy and the brilliant Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records and listened to Quincy Jones take me through his working process in producing “Thriller” and always had so much time for all those great songwriters from Tin Pan Alley and the Brill Building.

Having left Ceylon leaving behind my cats and dogs and budgies and Podi, the incredibly kind lady who was hired to look after me, I ended up in Hong Kong with my parents at the age of nine, and had to grow up very fast without knowing it.

I look at what’s ahead and there’s no clear picture, or as Dylan said, no direction of home.

Hong Kong spoils many of us, but I think that those glory days have come and gone.

This city was always here for the taking and I see those still playing the same old shell games. I don’t wish to play with them.

I personally believe that it’s time to have a global perspective of everything, and for this to happen, I must embrace and try to understand the new world forming around me.

The world around me is much more than Shenzhen or even China or horse racing, and it’s really about having grown up, made detours, become older and am finally facing various home truths and doing the best I can to fill in the holes.

TRUMPTY DUMPTY, THE SUCK UPS, AND OLD KING COLE…

ree

ree

He should never have gone to London to meet the King. But he did, got a bigly taste of what it’s like to be a King, really dug it and returned to home soil loftier and puffier and more delusional than ever.

It’s obvious that he’s now King Donny, and it’s kinda like the nursery rhyme above old King Cole being a merry old soul.

It’s also obvious that he’s confused many with his little dance at the funeral of Charlie Kirk, his somewhat unhinged speeches, his swollen ankles, and his Kash Patel that some call a lap dog named Chapati.

Let America sort out the problems they voted for and into the White House. The world must, however, thank them and those late night show hosts who have shone a very bright light on them, and by so doing, have made us see those loonies at home base and around the world whose legacies are being pulled from under them.

It’s the wake-up call that’s being finally wrung and it’s taken a group of comedians to get serious and create that long awaited paradigm shift.

There is a new media and a New Journalism taking shape.

It’s not The New Journalism of Tom Wolfe nor the Gonzo Journalism of Hunter S Thompson, but it’s born out of both.

It’s not about tiptoeing around fear and fear mongering and serial bullies.

What we are seeing is People Power and what John Lennon sang about decades ago.

It’s a PEACEFUL call to arms and the need to fix a lopsided world with too many buffoons given the power to rule by fear and creating chaos because this is their survival kit.

But enough is enough and Trumpty Dumpty has  had a great fall and and all the king’s horses and all the king’s men, can’t put Trumpty together again.
